OVERVIEW

Bridges Out of Poverty for Early Childhood Educators (ECE)

One of the worst things about poverty in the US is that people lose their future stories. To end poverty, we must help people develop their future stories.

– Bridges Out of Poverty

The Glen at St. Joseph offers professional development to Early Childhood Educators (ECE) who serve children and families. Our Bridges Out of Poverty workshop uses activities and discussions to promote quality child and youth learning and development.

By participating in our Bridges workshop, Early Childhood Educators receive 14 hours of Ohio Approved professional development through the Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral Association (OCCRRA).

The Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral Association (OCCRRA) has approved 14 hours of Ohio Approved credit in Social-Emotional Development for Early Childhood Educators.

Those who participate will:
  • Understand, that, despite our differences, we have common ground with the families we care for and that developing relationships of mutual respect impact how our children can thrive;
  • Learn about mental models of the economic classes and understand the interlocking nature of them and affect how differently people think;
  • Understand the “Tyranny of the Moment” and its impact on families in poverty;
  • Learn the definition of Poverty used in Bridges Out of Poverty;
  • Investigate the four causes of poverty and how they affect children who experience poverty;
  • Learn the Hidden Rules of Economic Class and how they affect the differences in people’s thinking;
  • Understand Registers of Language and Story Structure and how they impact decision making;
  • Discuss the 11 resources needed for families in poverty to create a future story of their choosing;
  • Develop a plan of action to use with colleagues and families they serve.
